The client

Unilever is one of the world's leading suppliers of fast-moving consumer goods.

The challenge

Unilever have always previously invested in a range of 'Off the shelf' training and development opportunities.  While these solutions have enabled Unilever employees to secure and implement business relevant knowledge of specific products and issues, the business wanted a fresh approach in order to review the effectiveness of the 'Off the shelf' solutions and question whether they were the most appropriate for the wider operational and people development issues the business needed to address.

The solution

Festo Didactic's Gary Fuller, Didactic Consultant, working in close co-operation with Unilever at the Crumlin site in South Wales developed a new structured approach to training projects called 'IDEAL'.

Rather than offer managers a knowledge based training programme, the IDEAL approach focused on providing employees the skill and understanding to identify problems and find the best and most effective solutions.  It was not about increasing skills and knowledge levels; it was about reducing factors such as downtime, and increasing productivity. 

Client benefits

With the new 'IDEAL' process in place it has quickly achieved a significant ROI for Unilever.  The impressive results included savings of over £26,000 per annum and improvements in site Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE) from 64 per cent to 76 per cent.  The results also included improved skill and knowledge levels within the workforce. 

Due to the success of the IDEAL programme at the Crumlin site, Unliver have now made plans to replicate it across other sites as well as make it part of the apprentice programme because it offers apprentices an ideal platform for vital context in their development.
